Foro LARVA, Guadalajara, México

On the haunting stage of LARVA, an old repurposed Cinema, Tzintzuni Varela presented her latest release “Volver a casa”, an introspective, eclectic album written at home on her piano.

Volver a casa is returning to the sweetness of home, of childhood, that safe place in the deepest of our being that contains our true essence”— as she describes it.

The music perfectly conveys this concept. It is comforting but at the same time intriguing; soothing, ethereal, but also transporting. It evokes the freedoms and the unburdened days of infancy. Nonetheless, the compositions are bold, jazzy, and novel; perhaps reflecting also the wild, inventive nature of childhood.

The setting of the show was conducive to a theatrical performance that enriched the musical production. Meaningful performing guests, such as Tzintzuni’s parents (who are also seasoned musicians), stepped in an out of the stage throughout the spectacle, adding to the intimacy of the concept. It is a peek through the folds of the author’s past that sends the listener in a journey into their own history. This idea that was also delightfully represented by the multi-layered visual piece (created by Tzintzuni too) that was displayed behind the seating area of the theatre, which in turn inspired the cover art of the release.
